Read Something Real: a celebration of nonfiction stories posted 3/8/21
The entire month of March, the library is celebrating nonfiction books with Read Something Real: a celebration of nonfiction stories. Why read nonfiction? Nonfiction reflects reality or the world around us. Mark Twain once said, "Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't.” Fiction is bound within the limits of the author's imagination. However, everything in nonfiction is real. From the birth of the most destructive weapon in human history to a cat protecting a family through generations of genocide, from the life of a bisexual Russian dancer to a doctor fighting to save Jewish orphans in WWII, some true stories are indeed stranger than fiction. |

Inspired Art on Display posted 2/28/18
Mrs. Maldonado's art students created large art sculptures inspired by Mark Jenkins. According to Mrs. Maldonado, "The purpose is to work with a material that is readily available and not traditional to sculpture. It was also to learn about Mark Jenkins and art history in his realm. Students got to choose any subject. Jenkins typically works with figures, but there are other artists who use objects. With making these and less sturdy materials, the artist has to preplan for gravity, weight, and general sizing changes that happen for various reasons. There is a lot of trouble-shooting and preplanning. Students are also learning how body language plays into communication, how to create larger works in 3D, and how to write artist statements." The works are currently on display in the library. |

2016 Abe Lincoln Pizza Party! posted 4/21/16
This year's winner of the Abraham Lincoln Reader's Choice award pizza party was Emily Grugan. She was drawn from a list of several students who read at least 5 of the Abraham Lincoln Reader's Choice Award books that made them all eligible to vote for the award. She chose her friends and favorite teacher, Mrs. Lemm (who was also chosen last year), to join her for the pizza party fun! We discussed the 2017 books and reflected back on the 2016 list and some of our favorite books. Some of those favorites included We Were Liars, Between Shades of Gray and Steelheart. If you would like to get a head start on reading the award books, stop by the library and sign up in the binder and start reading the books! Once you reach 5 books you become eligible to vote and get an entry to win the party. Then for each book after five you read, you get an extra entry into the drawing! Hope to see you next year at the pizza party. |

Star Wars Reads Day Entertains and Inspires posted 10/16/15
The Force was strong at WCHS on October 10 as the 501st Midwest Imperial Garrison, the Rebel Alliance and the Mandalorian Mercs helped to celebrate Star Wars Reads Day. There were many activities from pictures with the 501st and crew, games, Star Wars story time, podcasts from Star Wars Nerds Unite and Coffee with Kenobi, crafts, and prizes. Star Wars Reads Day is a day to celebrate and promote literacy to everyone. To promote literacy, the WCHS book club held a Scholastic Book Fair and all proceeds from the fair were used to purchase new books to give back to the community. A special thanks to all who volunteered to make the event such a great time. Also a special thanks to the 501st Midwest Imperial Garrison, Star Wars Nerds Unite, Coffee with Kenobi, Zeeks Comics and Games, the Washington District Library, many WCHS staff members, for their help to make the event special. Thanks also to the community who came out to have a great time. We look forward to next year's Star Wars Reads Day. |
