Blind Date with a Book 2017 posted 2/15/17
Book Club students met to recap the blind dates they took in February. Most dates went well (see list below for date titles and who they would be good for) but a few were not perfect matches. Two books found their way to the Break-Up box, We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson and, ironically, It's Not Me, It's You by Stephanie Kate Strohm. These books are available for checkout if you would like to raise their self esteem.
Here is a list of the Blind Dates and who they are best suited for:
Chocolate: the sweet science and dark secrets of the world's favorite treat by Kay Freidenborg Best date for those who like history and cooking
Sister Slam and the Poetic Motormouth Road Trip by Linda Oatman High Best date for those who like teen topics and poetry
All In: Naturals Book 3 Best Date for those who like mystery and action
Aurora West Best Date for those who like comics and action
Imitation Game Best Date for those who like Math and insolvable problems
Love, Ghosts, and Facial Hair Best date for those who like a quick, easy read
Stop Pretending Best Date for those who...well, not sure.

All The Bright Places Book Club Meeting posted 11/30/16
Book Club met to discuss All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. Everyone seemed to enjoy the book and discussion revolved around the characters Finch and Violet. The events of the story especially of Finch's obsession with death and suicide were on everyone's mind. The club completed a couple activities. One involved what we would leave behind if we were to create a geocaching trail of ourselves. The second activity was a "Wall of Ideas" where each of us, individually, wrote down words and phrases that came to mind then created a poem, sentences, or ideas based on our words. Our Kahoot book trivia winner was "Sheepy" or Zane. |
As part of the Book Club meeting to discuss The Court of Thorns and Roses, we wrote a book summary one sentence at a time. Rather, we passed a sheet of paper around and each book club member wrote a sentence that made the summary. So, as you read, be aware of spoilers and maybe some suspect details...
"Judging a book by it's cover and the misconceptions/miss understandings we see. The girl shoots, is hunting, and killed a wolf. The girl brought the wolf back home. The girl (Feyre) feeds her starving family with the meat. Tamlin enters and takes her away. She's taken across the wall to live in the spring court because she killed a faerie. Feyre (the girl) is apprehensive, but grows to enjoy the court. she worries about her family at home without her to help them. Feyre begins to realize that there are aspects of Tamlin that she finds disturbing. Despite this, Tamlin and Feyre grow to love each other. Feyre gets feeling that there might be a greater danger, like Hybern. Tamlin sends Feyre back to the mortal world. Feyre finds that Clare Bedore died and goes back to the mansion, in the spring court, to help Tamlin. She then goes through multiple tests, to save Tamlin, failing the last one, but answering a riddle to save everyone. Killing Amarantha, the person behind everyone's imprisonment."

Steelheart Book Club Meeting posted 1/25/16
The Book Club met to discuss the Abraham Lincoln Reader's Choice Award nominee book, Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. The general conversation revolved around how much everyone enjoyed the book. So much so, that I am looking forward to next month's vote, because I have a feeling that Steelheart will get more than a few votes.
As an activity for the club, we chose a favorite character and found passages and words that described our character from the book. Then members created poetry about the characters. Here are the results:

I've seen him die in an inferno,

Our visit with Joelle Charbonneau posted 11/17/15
We had a great visit with Joelle Charbonneau, author of The Testing Trilogy. She told us some really entertaining stories about how she became a writer and gave us lots of insight on where the themes of The Testing came from. Her talk with us was really informative in regards to how the writing process works and she answered several questions on topics ranging from writing, ideas for stories and the Cubs. She was very engaging and interacted well with us through Skype. We look forward to her new book coming out at the end of November. |

Poetry Inspired by The Testing
The poetry below was inspired by and written at the book club meeting on Thursday, March 19. Groups were asked to review the pages of The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau and find words and phrases that paint an apocalyptic picture. Then each group was to use the list of words and phrases to create a poem of the apocalypse. Here are the amazing results (they had about 8 minutes to do this). posted 3/20/15

Here we are reading The Testing Boots laced up, I empty my bag on the floor and repack it. Angry trees, blackened twisted Decayed people Dusty areas Pieces of wood missing |
Enemies all around
the people on the run Distopians abound the testing has begun remains of chemical warfare Danger in the air Circles of black crows Allies only she knows |
by Riley Marshall and group
Light falls on the ruins of yesterday, remnents from the past long forgotten glimmer in the pale light. There stands the broken battered, and distorted. Their eyes shimmer with intelligence that hints at their past. Their claws long and twisted, glimmer dangerously. They stand hunched in a circle, growling, and grunting. Their skin is black with grime and their clothes are tattered and torn. They are the relics of the past and the suggestion of the future. Their families and friends have long fallen yet they stand, changed and forever adapting to their environment. The war may have taken their world, but they have created a new one. |
Desolation I have cried.
Earth has died Decaying structures all around Wanting peace hallowed ground On a road of miles in length Angry trees with growing strength Blood and grief from my mind Friends in search of safety to find. Strangers staring from across the fence Monsters springing from bushes dense Wanting to give all, give my best What is the purpose of this test. |

Book Club Christmas Party 12/15/2014
A good time was had by all at the Christmas party. We devoured 8 pizzas and 10 orders of bread sticks. Three groups scoured the library looking for scavenger hunt items and serenaded us with Christmas Carols as part of the hunt. The Cookie Cupcake treat was unbelievable and we had lots of laughs watching Elf. Thanks Book Club for a great 2014, can't wait for next semester with our fundraiser and great book discussions. |
November Book Club Book posted 10/30/14
Voted on by book club members, November's book is Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas. This fantasy adventure is sure to be a page turner. From the back cover: "In a world without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King's Champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien. The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. And a princess from a faraway land will befriend her. But something evil dwells in the castle - and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival - and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world." As a bonus to reading the Throne of Glass, it is an Abraham Lincoln Readers Choice award book which means that it is one of the five required reads from the list to make you eligible to vote for the YA author of the year for Illinois. Book Club will meet to discuss the adventures of Throne of Glass on Tuesday, November 18 at both 7:30am and 3:00pm. Don't miss it! |
