Readapalooza! 2017
The Princess Bride Readapalooza! 2017 posted 5/26/17
The end of the school year is here which means our first Readapalooza! 2017 event has come and gone. We all enjoyed pizza, bread sticks, cookies and soda, talked about the novel, The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, and watched the film of the same name. We had some good laughs, discussed our frustration of the 100+ page chapter 5, and shared our favorite characters and scenes in the book. The next Readapalooza! 2017 event is June 23 to discuss the book Samurai Rising: The Epic Life of Minamoto Yoshitsune by Pamela S. Turner. We will also learn about the samurai fighting style Kendo and some Japanese history and culture. |
It is almost time to close the book on the 2016 - 2017 school year, but before that happens, don't forget to sign up for Readapalooza! 2017. Readapalooza! is a summer reading event where you get 3 books and 3 events on 3 different summer days. This year's theme is Adventure As You Wish.

Readapalooza! 2015
Fractured Spirits: Hauntings at the Peoria State Hospital: Event #2 posted 7/24/15
Readapalooza! made its way to the Peoria State Hospital in late June to be treated to a fantastic tour by the volunteers at the new PSH museum. It was a fantastic tour led by reinactors including a hay-rack ride through the property to view buildings and cemeteries (see pictures). We learned about the lives of a select few patients who are believed to still haunt the grounds. Then we listened to a lecture on the hauntings and heard audio evidence of spirits speaking and making themselves known. As we drove away, we were instructed to say, "Thanks for letting us visit, but please stay here!" So we said it...twice. |

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: Event #1 posted 6/11/15
Readapalooza! 2015 is under way! After the first full day of finals, Readapalooza! met to discuss The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. After a full day of tests, we were hungry! We feasted on pizza, bread sticks, and cookies, then the group did a "speed date" style book discussion. It was a fast and fun discussion of topics. In answer to the question as to how the book would be different if there were a main female character, someone said Jekyll never would have drank the potion because someone with sense would have been there to stop him! Finally, the group enjoyed the film League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. In the movie a cast of classic novel heroes like Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Captain Nemo, Huckleberry Finn, and the Invisible Man save the world from sure destruction.
Our next stories from the grave event is coming up in June with a visit to the Historic Peoria State Hospital cemeteries and a tour with Sylvia Shults, author of our next book, Fractured Spirits.

Readapalooza! is the WCHS library summer reading event that in 2015 is loaded with chilling and fun "Tales from the Grave." In Readapalooza! we read one classic, one Fiction and one non-fiction. This year we will start in May with The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. We will have a pizza party to discuss this "strange tale" and then we will watch a movie that involves this classic character!
In June, we will explore our nonfiction title written by local author, Sylvia Shults, Fractured Spirits: Hauntings at the Peoria State Hospital. We will travel to Bartonville where the hospital still exists and tour the Hospital's museum housed in the old firehouse, then tour the cemeteries with Sylvia Shults herself.
Finally, in July, we will dive into Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book and visit more spirits from the grave. We will have an end of summer picnic and Geocaching scavenger hunt.
